Family Support
As the well-being of families is crucial to the well-being of the nation, there is an overwhelming need for government to put in place strategies to support families. Such strategies must be designed to build social capital by promoting families and extending their capacity to function effectively. In doing so, it should take a long term, as well as a short term, view. The over-riding aims of government action should be to:
- build community support for families, including their capacity to interconnect and network;
- establish greater fairness for families by providing equitably based support, with a focus both on prevention and early intervention;
- empower families so as to improve their effectiveness, resilience and capacity for self-development.
SDA members and their families are entitled to a range of government services and benefits. Information regarding these benefits may be accessed through Centrelink.
Notwithstanding the current entitlements available, the SDA believes that more needs to be done by government to support families.
