Wages up for retail workers in July

The SDA has launched a mini campaign which aims to educate the South Australian public that pay rises for retail, fast-food and warehouse workers are good for our economy as a whole.

The SDA knows how important it is for your wages to go up.

Recently, the SDA commissioned a report from the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies about the impact of wages growth on the economy.

The report found that from 1 July this year, over 60,000 South Australian retail workers will receive a pay rise that was fought for by the SDA.

Combined, that’s $29.5 million in wage increases, which will provide our local economy a $61 million economic boost.

The SDA understands that strong economies are underpinned by a growing middle class – not a shrinking one. Wages must keep up as the cost of living rises and the pressure on working families grows.

We know SDA members are sick and tired of hearing employer lobby groups calling for retail wages to be cut, not just because it is unfair but because their argument that cutting wages will create jobs and help the economy is untrue.

This research proves that wages growth is good for the economy as it gives working people more money to spend in local shops, cafes and restaurants each week.

Our campaign aims to educate the wider community about the important role unions and union members, like you play in negotiating wages that help to drive our economy.

We also hope the campaign will encourage workers to join the SDA, which will increase our bargaining power when it comes to negotiating your wages and working conditions.

Your support as an SDA member means we can continue to negotiate fair and decent wages increases for retail, fast-food and warehouse workers.
