Local retail workers bear the brunt of changes to retail industry more than anyone else

The SDA – the Union for retail workers – is extremely saddened that South Australia is losing yet another iconic retailer, with Radio Rentals announcing it will close all stores in June.

SDA Secretary Josh Peak is concerned for the 100 local workers who will lose their jobs as a result of its closure.

“Radio Rentals has been part of South Australia’s retail industry for over 60 years and a workplace for many South Australians for decades.

“With strong online competition, it’s tough for traditional retailers like Radio Rentals.

“Retail workers are the ones who are most affected by this change and may struggle to find work in the future,” said Josh.

The SDA is calling on the State Government to ensure there are reemployment pathways available to Radio Rentals workers.

“As the retail sector changes, the Government must have an industry policy in place to ensure these workers are able to find new work,” said Josh.

In discussions between Radio Rentals and the SDA, the Company has assured the Union that employees will receive all of their entitlements.
