UNION WIN: Higher casual penalty rates for retail workers

Last year the SDA, the union for retail workers, WON higher penalty rates in the Retail Award for casuals working after 6pm weeknights and on Saturdays.

These changes are being phased in over a few years from 2018 through to 2021.

From 1 October 2019, penalty rates under the Retail Award for casuals are increasing to:

  • Monday to Friday after 6pm: 135%

  • Saturdays: 145%

It’s important for workers to receive higher rates of pay when they’re in casual work and when they’re working unsociable hours as fair compensation. That’s why the SDA has and always will fight to protect penalty rates and improve your pay and conditions at work.

If you’re affected by these changes, remember to check your next payslip to make sure you’re being paid correctly.

This applies to casual workers covered by the Retail Award but improvements to casual penalty rates also flow on to many SDA-negotiated Agreements. These companies include:

  • Best & Less

  • Big W

  • BWS

  • Coles Supermarkets

  • Country Road Group

  • David Jones

  • Harris Scarfe

  • Just Group

  • Spotlight

  • Woolworths Supermarkets
