Wages up for 50,000 retail workers in July

Independent research shows over 50,000 retail and fast-food workers will receive a wage increase in July that was fought for by their union, the SDA.

According to the report, this will deliver an economic boost of $41.2 million to the local South Australian economy.

That’s $26.4 million worth of wages going to workers each year and $550,000 for this week alone.

The SDA understands that strong economies are underpinned by a growing middle class – not a shrinking one. Wages must keep up as the cost of living rises and the pressure on working families grows.

Fair and decent wage increases don’t just help you and your family – they help to strengthen the economy.

The research from the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies shows that wages growth is good for the economy as a whole because it gives workers more money to spend in local shops, cafes and restaurants.

If workers wages go backwards, they’ll have to cut spending which will hurt local businesses and the economy.

That’s why union-negotiated wage increases are critical to driving our economy and helping you to make ends meet.
