Easter Sunday is a now a public holiday in South Australia

SA Parliament has just passed the Public Holidays Act 2023, making Easter Sunday a public holiday from 2024.

This bill has made changes to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day so that these days will always be public holidays in South Australia, no matter what day of the week they fall on.

This brings South Australia into line with the rest of the country.

South Australian workers will now be paid public holiday penalty rates on Easter Sunday.

Permanent workers can have Easter Sunday off with pay, meaning many more workers can now spend Easter with their families and friends.

This is a massive win for South Australian workers and the SDA Union, who has fought for these changes for 10 years.

We extend our thanks to the Labor Party, the Greens and Connie Bonaros MLC for supporting changes that put South Australian workers first.

Quotes attributable to SDA Secretary Josh Peak:

“This is a big win for South Australian workers.”

“For too long, South Australians have missed out on public holiday penalty rates and voluntary work that workers across the country are receiving on Easter Sunday.”

“Workers can finally take the day off with pay or earn public holiday rates if they give up valuable time with their family and friends on Easter Sunday.”

“South Australian workers are no longer second-class citizens on Easter Sunday.”

“Easter Sunday is one of the most important days of the year and now our public holiday laws finally reflect that.”
