SDA win to keep district allowance in the Silver City

SDA Secretary Peter Malinauskas welcomes a significant decision by the Fair Work Commission to reinstate the district allowance for workers in Broken Hill in Modern Awards.

In the decision made today, Broken Hill is now the only place in Australia to maintain a district allowance for workers of 4.28% over and above the Award rate of pay while other district allowances have lapsed.
“The continued advocacy by the SDA on this issue means retail, fast food, pharmacy and hair and beauty workers in Broken Hill will no longer have their take home pay cut.
“The SDA worked hard to ensure that workers in Broken Hill were not financially worse off because of the removal of the district allowance and this is a fantastic outcome for workers.
“As a result the SDA has now maintained a long and proud industrial tradition in Broken Hill in recognition of the relative remoteness of Broken Hill and the hard fought and won conditions for workers in the past,” said Mr Malinauskas.
The SDA is now working to put a draft order in place for the allowance to be reinstated.
