As Secretary for the past 8 years, Peter Malinauskas has been committed to ensuring retail, fast food and warehousing workers have strong representation – from negotiating new Workplace Agreements to securing decent pay rises and protecting penalty rates.
He’s been a member of the SDA since he started work at Woolworths when he was 15. Since then he have learned how essential it is for workers to have a strong voice when decisions are being made that affect them. Whether it be a CEO on pay rises or governments making a decision on health, education or tax – working people must have a seat at the table.
As you may be aware, recently Peter was asked by the Premier of South Australia Jay Weatherill to nominate to become a Member of State Parliament.
His nomination has been successful and from 1 December this year, he will be joining State Parliament as a Member of the Legislative Council.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Peter who will continue to stand up for working families in Parliament.

The SA/NT Branch Committee of Management has approved that Sonia Romeo will elevate to the position of Secretary – a familiar face to SDA members as Assistant Secretary for the past 8 years.
Having worked at the SDA for over 20 years, Sonia has extensive experience working in all areas of the union, from negotiating Workplace Agreements to organising campaigns including the 100% Pay at 18+ and Protect Penalty Rates campaign and working with members to resolve workplace issues.
Sonia first joined the SDA when she started working at Foodland at the age of 14 and she has been committed to the Union and the ideals of the labour movement ever since.
Peter says Sonia is the best person to lead the union into the future and ensure all SDA members are protected and supported at work.
The Committee of Management have also approved Josh Peak to take on the role of Assistant Secretary. Josh has worked at the SDA for the past 8 years as a Union Organiser, resolving workplace problems on behalf of members.
