Details of SDA membership

What does it cost to be a member?

SDA fees are modest and you can choose to contribute fortnightly via direct debit from your bank account or your credit card. Fees are calculated according to the amount of hours you expect to work.

1 to 9 hours per week: $3.95 a week / $7.90 per fortnight

10 to 19 hours per week: $6.80 a week / $13.60 per fortnight

20 hours or more per week: $9.50 a week / $19.00 per fortnight

All fees include GST.

Are fees tax deductible?

Yes. Your SDA contributions are 100% tax deductible. At the end of the financial year, if you need to file a tax return, you can claim the cost of your membership as a deduction.

Letting us know if things change.

If you leave your job, or your hours change, it’s important that you let the SDA know so that we can keep your membership up-to-date.

Negotiation of wages and conditions

The SDA goes into to bat for retail and fast food workers by negotiating and fighting for the best possible and wages and conditions. We do this at the Fair Work Commission and directly with employers on your behalf.

Protection of all workplace rights

You have a right to be treated with dignity and respect at work. You also have the right to be paid for all hours worked. If you’re not paid correctly, we can help. The SDA is here to ensure your employer follows all the hard-won rights in your workplace Agreement or Award skilfully negotiated by the SDA.

Need advice? Got a problem at work? Do you think you’re being underpaid? The SDA’s confidential hotline receives more than 1000s of calls from members seeking help and advice each year. Fast, accurate and efficient advice is available exclusively for SDA members.

Legal representation

The SDA is with you when times are tough and difficulties arise at work. Our team of Lawyers and Union Reps are experts at dealing with unfair dismissal, wages underpayments and if your employer fails to comply with your Agreement or Award.

Each year injured workers have received millions worth of entitlements, thanks to the SDA. The SDA’s Legal team offers advice when it comes to WorkCover claims. An initial consultation can be organised with one of our Lawyers who will guide you in making a claim. These Lawyers will be with an injured SDA member for every step of their WorkerCover claim.

Work health & safety

The SDA makes the workplace safer through a network of hundreds of workplace Health and Safety Reps (HSRs) who have prevented hundreds of accidents by spotting hazards and fixing them. The SDA Training Centre is an Accredited Training Provider recognised by SafeworkSA, and offers a range of training courses to HSRs.

Industry wide advocacy and campaigns

The SDA is fighting to improve working conditions for members. In South Australia the SDA recently led the way is establishing 2 new part day public holidays each year or New Years Eve and Christmas Eve from 7pm.

The SDA is currently running the 100% Pay at 18+ campaign, where we are fighting to win fair pay for all adult workers.

FREE Accident Insurance

All Direct Debit Members receive Free Accident Insurance and can claim up to $78,000 as part of the SDA’s Accident Insurance Scheme. So if you’re an SDA Direct Debit Member and have an accident and injure yourself outside of work, you’re automatically covered by our Accident Insurance. Conditions apply.
