Christmas trading hours strike right balance for retail workers, shoppers and business

SDA Secretary Sonia Romeo says the Christmas trading hours announced by the State Government today allow plenty of time for shopping but also give retail workers an opportunity to take time off over the festive season.

“We have the balance right here in South Australia – it gives the community ample time to shop but also recognises that retail workers deserve a day off every now and then too.

“It’s important for retail workers to have the right to take time off on public holidays, just like everyone else in the community.

“If they do choose to work on public holidays, then they will receive appropriate public holiday penalty rates,” she said.

SDA Assistant Secretary Josh Peak urges the community to show respect to retail workers when the shops get busy closer to Christmas.

“Christmas trading is the busiest time of year in the retail industry and we can assist any SDA members with questions or concerns around rostering or public holiday entitlements.

“I would also ask the South Australian community to please keep in mind over Christmas and New Year to be respectful of retail workers who are doing the best they can in very demanding times.

“We are hopeful for a boost in retail trade over the Christmas period so when the shops start to get busy, please be careful not to take any frustrations out on retail workers as often the circumstances are out of their control,” said Josh.
