NSW Government announces $5000 fines for coughing or spitting on retail workers

Following calls from the SDA, the NSW Government has announced that anyone found intentionally spitting or coughing on a retail worker faces a $5000 on the spot fine.

The NSW Government announced on 19 April 2020 its ability to fine, people found intentionally spitting or coughing on workers would be extended from police and healthcare workers to include all workers both at work or on the way to or from work.

Retail workers have been at the frontline of this crisis and have been going above and beyond for their communities.

The SDA has been working hard to ensure that everything possible is being done to protect our frontline workers including adherence to social distancing measures and stronger safety protections.

These fines announced will help further protect workers during these difficult times.

These fine also send a strong message to the community: abuse and violence towards retail workers will not be tolerated.
